Transylvania County

Transylvania County is home to 33,000 people. It is known as the Land of Waterfalls due to the 250 waterfalls that inhabit the area. It is also known as the wettest county in the state, receiving over 90 inches of rain each year. Transylvania County provides a spectacular backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains. Chestnut Knob is the highest point at 6,025 feet and is located northwest of Brevard, the county seat. The county also provides many adventures for outdoor enthusiasts. The French Broad River is the 3rd oldest river in the world. Kayaking, canoeing, or tubing is available to enjoy on this river. Pisgah Forest and DuPont Forest’s mountain bike trails have been deemed “America’s best kept secret,” by Bike Magazine.

Many people travel to Transylvania County not only for outdoor adventures, but for the charm of its towns too. Brevard is a family-oriented, small town nestled in a valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors from all over come to enjoy the shops, festivals, and local charm. Each year, Brevard hosts the White Squirrel Festival, which is named after the rare white squirrel that inhabits this part of North Carolina. The 2 day festival features costume contests, art and crafts, food, and some of the best local and regional bands around.

Transylvania Tobacco-Free Living

Success Stories

Kick Butts Day

In March of 2013, the Transylvania County Boys and Girls club joined thousands of youth in every state and around the world for an international “Kick Butts Day” to discourage their peers and others from tobacco use. Through various activities at the club and in the community, they spread the word that tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.

Multi-Unit Housing

MountainWise has assisted two multi-unit housing properties in Transylvania County, Mountain Glenn and Laurel Village, with their implementation of a smoke-free policy. This policy went into effect on January 1st, 2014. MountainWise provided the property managers with assistance and resources for this policy change and is looking forward to working with these properties throughout the implementation of this new policy. The Property Managers are pleased to be a part of improving the health and safety of their residents and were very excited to educate and inform their residents about the benefits of this policy change for their community. No-Smoking signage was purchased by the CTG state staff for use at these properties.

Electronic Cigarettes

Transylvania County Board of Commissioners passed a policy in December, 2013 that banned E-Cigarettes in all county buildings and public places deemed by the county. The smoking ordinance for Transylvania County can be found here. E-Cigarettes do not contain tobacco, but instead liquid nicotine that smokers inhale and exhale. Public health agencies are reporting possible side effects of inhaling this nicotine vapor, and health risks for E-cigarettes pose to the public.
