By providing information and support to managers and owners we believe that we can help them make the healthy choice the easy choice, thereby strengthening our community.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/MKVW8XN\" target=\"_blank\">free session<\/a> will include the following presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perspectives from the Field<\/strong><br \/>\nA panel of local property managers &amp; owners to<br \/>\ndiscuss their experiences managing smoke-free units.<br \/>\nDiscussion about the fire hazards of smoking in multiunit<br \/>\nhousing with local fire fighter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scott Alderman<\/strong>, President of the Landura Companies, on the business advantages of going smoke-free<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Stein<\/strong>, MPH,JD of the Community Transformation Grant Project will give a lawyers perspective on the legalities of going smoke-free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus &#8211; you&#8217;ll have the chance to network &amp; mingle with other participants, and participate in a Q&amp;A. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Smoke-free policies reduce maintenance and turnover costs, and are quickly becoming the industry standard.\u00a0Secondhand smoke affects all housing\u00a0residents and employees, including nonsmokers, the elderly,\u00a0children, and those with asthma. There is no safe level of exposure\u00a0to secondhand smoke, which kills about 50,000 adults in the U.S.\u00a0each year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/MKVW8XN\" target=\"_blank\"><b>HiTop ASSIST\u00a0<\/b><\/a>works to improve the health of North Carolina residents by promoting smoke-free environments and tobacco-free lifestyles. \u00a0HiTop ASSIST hopes to build the capacity of diverse organizations and communities to implement and carry out effective, culturally appropriate strategies to reduce deaths and health problems due to tobacco use and\u00a0secondhand smoke.<\/p>\n<p>The Smoke-free Multi-Unit Housing Breakfast will be held on Tuesday, April 8th from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Jackson County Library located at\u00a0310 Keener Street\u00a0in Sylva, NC.\u00a0Breakfast will be provided and space is limited so please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/MKVW8XN\" target=\"_blank\" shape=\"rect\">register<\/a>\u00a0here by no later than\u00a0Tuesday, April 1st.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We know that when smoking is discouraged, people are healthier. \u00a0And that any exposure to second hand smoke is dangerous. \u00a0That&#8217;s why MountainWise is proud to partner with HiTop ASSIST to host a breakfast listen and learn for\u00a0multi-unit housing managers and owners, and community partners.
