Job Posting: Communications and Development Specialist

MountainWise works in partnership with public health entities in the eight westernmost counties of NC to promote healthy, strong, resilient communities by supporting active lifestyles, healthy eating and substance-free living. Currently, MountainWise is hiring for a 32 hour/week Communications and Development Specialist to support the needs of our projects and programs. 

General Summary: 

This position works closely with the Program Coordinators and Directors, as well as other team members and partners to effectively communicate the work of our organization across a wide variety of platforms and materials, as well as to assist the HPHC Project Director in raising funds for that specific programming. The position is for 32 hours/week, beginning in April, 2024, and pays $25/hr plus benefits. This position will be largely work-from-home with occasional regional travel, but has the option for shared office space within the Macon County Health Department if that is desired.

Primary Position Activities: 

  • Support development and implementation of regional MountainWise Organization and Program communications including but not limited to the following programs:
    • Double Up Food Bucks
    • Healthy People Healthy Carolinas
    • Tobacco Prevention
    • Minority Diabetes Prevention Program
  • Develop and post regular and comprehensive social media content
  • Website content generation and general maintenance
  • Press communications including but not limited to press releases, advertisements, and articles
  • Develop and maintain organization and programmatic branding templates and materials
  • Monthly newsletter content generation and distribution
  • Represent MountainWise at monthly WNC Health Communicators Collaborative meetings and collaborate on projects according to alignment and capacity
  • Participate in all relevant program and organizational meetings in which communications or development support is needed. 
  • Work closely with the Healthy People Healthy Carolinas Project Director in support of raising funds for the various activities under that program umbrella. This includes support with grant-writing and reporting as well as fundraising activities such as sponsorship program development and/or management.

Additional Position Activities: 

  • Work in coordination with project management and partners to support public health communications as needed. 
  • Develop programmatic and organization print materials including but not limited to: flyers, brochures, rack cards, etc.
  • Develop programmatic and organization promotional videos as needed
  • Develop and maintain key stakeholder database/s
  • Develop project data infographics
  • Support research efforts for programs as needed
  • Implement follow up communications with donors
  • Support public event planning as needed
  • Develop and distribute the MountainWise Annual Report and support the development of programmatic Annual Reports as needed. 
  • Develop MountainWise Employee Handbook and other internal policy documentation as needed
  • If applicable: translation of organization and program materials from English to Spanish if needed

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree with minimum of 2 years of communications/marketing experience preferably in a non-profit or health-related environment. Grant writing experience including acting as primary author of successful grant applications to both private and public funders. Experience working in rural communities and/or western North Carolina also preferred. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

Driver’s license required.

Computer Skills: 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Proficiency in Google Drive and Google products

Proficiency in social media communications strategies and content generation

Experience with graphic design and video editing platforms preferred

Experience with website maintenance and/or development preferred

Communication Skills:

Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communication skills required. Ability to interact professionally and work collaboratively with a wide range of professionals, both within and outside of the organization. A preference will be given to bi-lingual candidates who speak both English and Spanish.

Work Environment: 

Mostly work-from-home with occasional regional travel. Option for hybrid work environment (part home-based with in-office hours as desired at the Macon County Health Department).

  • May involve use of personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • May require occasional early morning, evening, or weekend work, depending on meetings and events scheduled.

FLSA Status: Full-time employee (32 hours per week) 

Compensation Range: $25/hr

Reporting Relationship:  

Reports directly to the Program/Project Coordinators and Directors. Other indirect reporting/work with other team members or community partners depending on specific projects of focus.
